Getting Started with Terrapin Works

Thank you for choosing Terrapin Works

Let's start with some definitions. We're a rapid prototyping service in our primary role. We have several secondary roles ranging from support of research equipment to software development. We're always expanding, so keep checking back.

Now that we've covered the basics, let's get to the process for requesting services

Depending on what you're looking to print/request, there are different locations within the Terrapin Works system that you will find useful. A good rule of thumb is that you start with the basics and work your way up the ladder (i.e. start with a consumer 3D printer before using a commercial grade one).

Requesting a basic print job is extremely easy. Skip to Getting Started for Basic Users & Requests to learn about requesting a basic print job.

Requesting an advanced print job, or requesting that your job be printed on our higher-end equipment is a little bit more involved. Skip to Getting Started for Advanced Users and Requests to learn about the process for requesting access to our higher-end equipment.

External users for either a basic or advanced print job can use the same methods, after paperwork is filed. Skip to Getting Started for External Users and Requests to learn about the process to achieve university affiliate status.

Getting Started for Basic 3D Printing Requests for Internal Users

Already have a 3D file? The Makerbot Inovation Center staff handles 3D prints in consumer-grade PLA on Makerbot Replicator 5th Gen and Z18 printers.

Print Requests Basics:

  • Print requests are handled through the Innovation Center Management Platform (ICMP)
  • You are able to authenticate on ICMP with your Directory ID and password
  • Printers are only capable of consumer-grade PLA at this time
  • We do not accept .makerbot files. Please use the .stl file format if possible

Cost:

  • Prints cost $.10 per gram for PLA
  • Prints in Tough PLA & Glow in the Dark PLA are $.20 per gram
  • See our pricing page for accepted methods of payment

Getting Started for Advanced Requests for Interal Users

Do you have a prototype that requires a higher level of durability/detail/etc than the MakerBot's are capable of producing? This is the section for advanced requests for higher-end equipment or anything above the level of a consumer 3D printer.

If this is your first time using any equipment we offer here, please reach out to us if there are any questions. Our design engineers will be working with you to achieve the best possible results.

If you're an advanced user (i.e. you're looking to use higher-end equipment or get a higher level of detail/durability/etc. than the MakerBot's are capable of producing) you'll want to reach out to us if this is your first time using higher-end equipment. Since our higher-end equipment is more costly to run and you're looking to achieve the best results possible, we'll have a design engineer work with you.

We have three access models for our higher-end equipment.

Service Model

These requests require a technician to process and aprove the file for manufacturing.

Service Model Basics:

  • Submit your request through the Job Ticketing System: https://go.umd.edu/submit
  • If your are not affiliated with the Univeristy, please email us terrapinworks@umd.edu for a guest account in the Ticketing System
  • Equipment are found on the service model page and listed on the Ticketing System
  • If you are requesting 3D printing, please use the .stl file format if possible

Cost:

  • Quotes are produced by technicians after processing the file and generating material/time estimates

Supervised Self-service Model

  • After your account has been set up, you may request job time through the TW Scheduler
    • You're able to log in to the TW Scheduler using your Directory ID and password

Cost:

  • Pricing varies by machine and usage. See our pricing page for more information

Research Self-service Model

In support of the research and academic mission of University of Maryland - College Park, these requests also require your training on the equipment and then schedule time to run your own job for research purposes. The model requires a research-based use case with some exceptions.

Research Self-service Basics:
